blackberry

computer

….thats all you really need isnt it?

It is so crazy how attached I (i’ll speak for myself) am to technology.  We are given so much power to connect to anything we need to connect to that when it is taken away from us at any give point we feel as if something is missing.  I have a blackberry and I am so used to using it for many things such as finding info quickly, i.e. google, pictures, chatting, international chatting, school, emails, agenda, alarm.  I basically use it for almost everything so when my blackberry broke last week I was so annoyed and almost disconnected in a way.  When we are given so much at our fingertips it is difficult to have it all taken away the next minute.   It is pretty addictive.

….Facebook

July 14, 2008 at 6:57 am (Uncategorized)

As I sit and wonder what my media blog should be about, I am using one of the most “hot” media sources there are out there…dun dun dun FACEBOOK.  Sometimes I am embarrased to say how much time I spend doing nothing browsing on facebook.  I feel like this has became a huge part of my generation.  Some consider it wasting time, but it seems as though many spend much time, maybe a bit too much time on this crazy surface, information, picture world they call the internet.  I don’t like to be too attached or too extreme so anytime I find myself rushing to the computer and quickly typing the FA I get a bit embarrased and tell myself I shouldn’t spend as much time on facebook.  So I’m making a list of pros and cons of facebook. Interesting.

Some negative things about facebook ( in my opinion):

  • probably and most defintely a lot of more important things you(I) should and could be doing
  • seeing other people’s lives in pictures and just knowing too much about people (a little creepy)
  • instead of going out looking at images of people doing what you could be doing…getting a little weird and confusing
  • being exposed!
  • no privacy
  • people knowing about your life
  • checking on ex-boyfriends facebook page (i’m sounding a little crazy but i’m really just trying to think of all of the cons of facebook) or current crush, bf/gf, whatever the case may be

Pros:…….there must be a couple, right?

  • reconnecting with people you lost touch with and really wanted to reconnect with but just didn’t really know how or didn’t remember
  • reminding you its your friends birthday!! :) facebook birthday messages, always fun :)
  • spying on your current or ex-bf…could be looked at both ways (hahah but I would say that was a con ;))
  • staying in touch
  • I guess meeting new people
  • sharing pictures and laughs with friends
  • laughing at your friends/ with your friends
I think that’s pretty detailed for now.  But now that i look back at the list, there are a pretty decent number of pros and cons which makes me think that this is one of the reasons facebook is just so popular. It’s a love/ hate thing, for me at least.
This is pretty silly but I thought it was appropriate for all of the “facebookers”
The END

Charlie Bartlett

July 6, 2008 at 4:57 am (Uncategorized)

I watched the movie Charlie Bartlett the other day, and I was pretty surprised by the seriousness of the light-hearted teen movie.  It is about a boy who wants to be popular so bad so he starts to become the schools “psychiatrist” and sells all kinds of prescription drugs to the student body.  I think this movie has a pretty serious topic, although the previews, cover, and overall appeal of the movie seems to be directed towards younger people.  I am 20, and even I was pretty shocked by the drug use in the movie by high school kids.  I guess it’s more shocking because i am aware of all the people my age and maybe even younger who have problems with prescription drugs.  The movie is rated R.  Since prescriptions drugs for anxiety, depression, and all other sorts of problems are so controversial, this movie does not even touch on the controversy.  In fact, the way that drugs are taken and given out in the movie, by Charlie’s real psychiatrist and his mother, seems a bit ridiculous.  This may be where the humor of the movie is supposed to come from.  In a way I saw this movie as a sort of advertisement for prescription drugs.  Charlie Bartlett was prescribed xanax, zooloft, prozac, ritalin all at the same time.  I am not a doctor or professional but this seems to be a lethal mix.  I know it’s just a movie, but i felt it was somewhat irresponsible to put a movie like this out and not even touch on the seriousness of these drugs.  My opinon.  If anyone else has seen it maybe they could tell me what they think.

Gilberto Gil and Devendra Banhart

June 30, 2008 at 7:33 am (Uncategorized)

Lately I’ve been paying attention to all sorts of media and advertisements around me and I’ve noticed how certain advertisements are placed in certain places, because they are aimed towards certain people.  I went to a concert tonight at the Hollywood Bowl, where Gilberto Gil, an old classic Brazilian singer and Devendra Banhart, a relatively new hip singer were playing.  I found it so interesting the split between the types of people that were there to see both artists.  It was very clear who came to see who.  The people who went to see Gilberto Gil were mostly brazilian people in Los Angeles.  The ones who probably went to see Devendra Banhart were all very hip ecelectic younger people dressed in a very particular stylish way.  Anyways, what I found interesting as well were the ads at the hollywood bowl.  Because such a variety of people go there all the time, I think the advertisements at the were not aiming towards a certain group of people so much.  The ones i remebered most were a shiny new red lexus, wamu, and of course advertising for the hollywood bowl and other artists performing there.  I didn’t think that the advertisements aimed towards any certain, age, sex, ethinicity, or anything else.  I guess the one thing that everyone there had in common was their love for music.  For those who have never heard of either of the two, I would recommend checking them out.
